Unofficially, Call It Arson was conceived in 1994 in a Connecticut basement when friends Ryan White and James Downes were only eleven years old. (1994) Officially formed as a quartet in 2002, their sound can be compared to classic and modern rock acts such as The Police, The Cure, Karate, and Weezer; but members acknowledge a wide range of musical influences. “Ryan and I started out covering The Beatles,” Downes admits, “but we have been heavily influenced by groups ranging from Death Cab for Cutie to Coalesce, Jackson Browne to Earth Crisis, Sunny Day Real Estate to Michael Rose.” The name Call It Arson decrees the destruction of the United States’ current socio-political system in hopes of rebuilding one that is more just.
Call It Arson producer, Steven Short (Echo and the Bunnymen, Phantom Planet, The Din Pedals), recalls the making of the band’s Friend For Life debut EP as a “once in a lifetime magical, musical experience.” With the help of their self-titled full length on Connecticut indie label Teishu Records, CIA has amassed a solid following not only in Connecticut, but many other rock hotspots in the US. Call It Arson has played shows with groups ranging from indie rock’s Hey Mercedes (ex-Braid) and Camber to progressive metal-ers Dysrhythmia and Majority Rule. Plans are in place to tour this winter and spring and later record a full length with Steven Short late spring 2005.
