Profane Existence
Profane Existence Records was started in 1989 to release records by political and punk bands from around the world. Very successful early releases like NAUSEA's Extinction LP and DOOM's Police Bastard EP helped establish Profane Existence as one of the biggest and most respected DIY punk labels anywhere in the world. Combined with the efforts of PE magazine, the record label helped establish a political conscience behind the music, pushed for greater inclusion of all people within the scene, and championed more abrasive styles of punk music (now given the blanket term "crust punk" by many).
Profane Existence is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city is deep in the north-central United States and the largest North American population center this close to the arctic circle. Long winters and general isolation have created an atmosphere where the local punk scene and a strong radical community have thrived. PE has always been active in the heart action, helping to operate several underground venues and establishing the volunteer-run record store Extreme Noise. Profane Existence has also released works from many local bands and thus elevated them to internationally recognized status. "Local" bands PE has released or is currently working with include PISSED, MISERY, ASSRASH, STATE OF FEAR, CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE, CHILDREN OF BARREN WASTELAND, PROVOKED, GARMONBOZIA, DISRESPECT, ASS, BLACKOUT, and FAGGOT. People involved in various eras of Profane Existence have also gone on to establish their own labels including Sin Fronteras Discos, Fired Up! and Havoc Records.
Today PE Records is one of the most prolific labels of the DIY punk rock network. PE averages one or more release per month, and plays a crucial role releasing some of the most cutting edge political punk rock from around the world. There are also several special subscriptions available for PE Records titles include the ultra exlusive Vinyl Retentive Series and low-priced CDs of PE subscription service.
