Square is a highly energetic and eclectic rock/alternative/pop rock band that has masterfully incorporated the musical backgrounds of each of its members. The square sound combines everything from alternative rock of the 90’s, 80’s metal, thrash, punk, a little blues, a little funk and even a little latin jazz thrown in for flavoring. Vocalist/Guitarist Andy Ainsworth and Bassist Michael Gonzalez got together in 1996 to begin a writing collaboration that would take them away from the thrash metal roots they shared. The result was more than a dozen songs that paved the way to what was becoming the square sound. Andy brought a mixture of influences from jazz, classical and metal while Michael brought a steady, rhythmic bass sound indicative of rock legends like Kiss to the musical sound of square. Lyrically, square songs are a hybrid of the poetic talents of both of its founders. After a few months Jason Mracky (currently of Psykick Girl) joined in and square the band was officially formed. Jason brought a soulful, blues influence to the music and gave the music a rock solid spine with which to stand. Shortly after square welcomed Ray Hernandez and Al Person to the square lineup. Ray is one of the best shredder guitarists around and plays with the speed of Yngwie Malmsteen and the style of Eddie Van Halen. Ray has allowed square to delve into songs with awe inspiring solos reminiscent of 80’s metal bands without the big hair and sappy power ballads. Al Person is an accomplished percussion soloist with deep latin jazz roots that has brought square to a new level of professionalism and depth of feeling. Square songs have groovy and funky undertones that can be traced directly to the presence of Al in the group. Unfortunately for square Jason left the band after a couple of years and has since moved on to other projects. Fortunately, Al is also an accomplished drummer and has since filled the role left by Jason and found a way to integrate a rock solid drum beat with the groove and style of latin percussion. Square focuses on two main concepts: a high level of professionalism and enjoyment of the music (both square playing it and the audience listening to it). Every member of square enjoys performing, writing, collaborating and it is obvious that they are close friends and just having the time of their lives. Square brings a sense of fun and humor to everything they do and it is clearly reflected in the responses from square fans.
